Nurse Annie Elizabeth HINES

Annie Elizabeth KUCKS was born 24th May 1882 at Dugandan, Queensland. Her parents were Charles Frederick William Kucks and Katharina Schmidt.

Annie married John Joseph HINES (1871-1937) from Fernvale on 17th February 1903 in Brisbane. They lived together at Beaudesert for 14 years during which time 3 children were born.

In 1917 she went, with John’s consent, to take charge of a private hospital at Rosewood, which previously had been carried on by her mother, Nurse Katharina Kucks. John obtained employment at the Rosewood sawmill.

Subsequently, Annie and the children left Rosewood and moved to Bostock Street, Booval, Ipswich in 1925. On Christmas Eve in 1926, John visited her at Ipswich. There was an argument because Annie and the children wanted to go into town and John objected. They all ended up going, but a few days later on 4th January he lef and told her he wasn’t coming back. She did not hear from him again, nor did he contribute to her support. 

In 1933, Annie divorced John on the grounds of desertion. She said, “The first 12 months were happy but after that it was no good at all. He treated me with cruelty, and used bad language.” A decree nisi was granted and made absolute on 20th December.

John was working as teamster and timbergetter at Dundas when he died in an accident in 1937. A dead bloodwood tree, which was struck by the log he was snigging, fell and struck him, fracturing his skull. 

Annie married for a second time to Wilhelm Friedrich LUDWIG (1875-1941) on 22nd January 1936. They lived at Loganlea. A few months after they married a tornado swept the settlements of Loganlea and Waterford.
The eight-roomed dwelling of Mr William Ludwig was carried bodily for about 60 yards and deposited near the railway line, where it was smashed to matchwood. Not one stick was left connected with another to indicate the design of the house. Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig were found by neighbours sitting dazed and injured among the wreckage. Mrs Ludwig was taken by train to Kuraby and thence to the Brisbane General Hospital by ambulance. She was suffering from probable internal injuries, a fractured pelvis, and an injury to the right leg. The Loganlea railway station, a few hundred yards from the Ludwigs’ home was levelled to the ground.

Wilhelm died in 1941 and Annie moved to 50 Brook Street, South Brisbane. Annie died 9th October 1957.
