What’s In A Name?

Some of us like to name our home or property, giving character and personality to that property and the area in which it’s located. We choose names that resonate with us and reflect the unique essence of the place, typically a name that has personal meaning for us. This tradition was brought to Australia by the first immigrant settlers who often named their homes after their place of origin. It was also a way to find people before a system of naming streets and numbering houses was introduced.

A property name may reflect any of these examples:

• architectural (Gables); geographical (Kenilworth, Meadow View, Stonehouse); historical significance (Camelot); literary (Wuthering Heights); occupational (Mill House); personal (Alexville); floral (Rose Cottage); nautical (Seacrest); Indigenous (Pindari); place of peace and calm (Mon Repos); humorous (Bad Manors); creative (Emoh Ruo)

I have named my home “Rosewood Cottage” as I felt it needed a name & I’m still researching when it was built. The land originally was selected by Richard Mason then sub divided later. Masons Gully and Mason’s Bridge were named in his honour! Carl August Wilhelm Schmidt was the original owner of my home. He retired from the land in 1913 and came to live at Rosewood. The Barram family lived here later. Rosewood has such a rich history & I’m sure the present day ancestors appreciate the many months of unpaid research you do to bring & keep our history alive. Gottlieb and Elisabeth Hertweck, Pine Grove, Mt Marrow
My grandparents Gottlieb (Guy) Hertweck and Elisabeth née Krebs, had a dairy farm called Pine Grove, at Mt Marrow very close to Mt Marrow SS. They built a small house on the property for the school teacher. It was called Marrowville. They worked the farm for about 40 years from about 1902 to 1942. The teacher they talked about most was Mr Henry Guymer. They were great friends. Henry and his wife Annie began teaching at Moggill SS in March 1925. It was very convenient for the teacher but my father Wilf Hertweck thought it was a bit too close for the head teacher to live . I’ll have a look for the Mt. Marrow 75th anniversary book and see who else taught there. The C. L. Krebs on the list would be my grandmother’s brother I think.  Elaine Phillips (2/8/25)

My mum and dad Joyce and Arnold Rieck bought Glendalough in John St in 1959 and I remember there was an Alvie branded door mat by the back stairs. However Mum insisted we use the original name Glendalough. (a lake in Ireland)  David Rieck (2/08/25)

ROSEWOOD, Thursday. Boy Scouts’ Camp.
On Saturday last the Rosewood Troop of Scouts, under the charge of Scoutmaster P. Capern, and the “sub pack,” under Sub-master F. Capern; tramped to “Bremer View,” the residence of Mr. B. G. Wilson (president of the local scout committee) for a week-end camp. On arrival, the scouts unpacked their kits, and made everything ready for the night. Before tea the boys all. enjoyed a swim. Tea was cooked by the boys themselves, and after the “washing-up,” a camp-fire “sing-song”‘ concluded a very enjoyable afternoon. “Lights out” sounded at 9.30, and all settled down for the night. Early rising was the order for the next day, and all turned out by six o’clock. After breakfast, scouting practices were indulged in concluding wih a swim before dinner. In the afternoon, Mr. Wilson kindly placed his residence and library at the disposal of the boys, and a pleasant time was spent in reading. At 3.30, the home trail was started, and the party reached home before dark, thoroughly satislfied with the good time spent in the open-air.
