OBITUARY. MR. F. J. W. EICHSTADT

ROSEWOOD – The death took place recently at his home, Rosewood, of Mr. Frank Julius William Eichstadt, a well known and esteemed resident of Rosewood. The late Mr. Eichstadt, who was 82 years of age, was born in Berlin, Germany. He came to Queensland at the age of seven (actually he was 1), and received his early education at the Fortitude Valley Boys’ School, under Mr. C. Hurworth. He was admitted to the teaching staff of that school in 1877. Later, as head teacher, he taught at Camp Flat, Emu Creek, Craiglie (near Port Douglas), Swanfels, Warrill Creek, Terror’s Creek, and in 1904 he went to Tallegalla. After serving there for seven years, he had six months’ extended leave. In 1911 he resigned from the education service and made his home at Rosewood. 

For over 75 years Mr. Eichstadt lived in Queensland, from the Far North to the borders of New South Wales, and many were the stories he could tell of drought, flood, and adventure by land and sea. At 17 years of age he joined B Company, Moreton Regiment, of the old Volunteer Corps, under command of Capt. Snelling, and later Capt. M’Farlane. For six years he served in the corps, and when his official duties took him to other parts of the State he became a member of any rifle club that operated nearby. He was an enthusiastic captain, president, and member of the Rosewood Rifle Club, which he joined many years ago.

In 1927 he was elected chairman of the Rosewood Shire Council. For many years Mr. Eichstadt was superintendent of St. Luke’s Church of England Sunday School. He was a member of the Rosewood A. and H. Association, and took a practical interest in show work. 

In May (17th) this year, Mr. and Mrs. Eichstadt celebrated the diamond anniversary of their wedding. The late Mr. Eichstadt is survived by his widow. The funeral left St Luke’s Church of England, Rosewood, for the Toowong Cemetery. Rev. J. H. Smith conducted a short service in the church, and officiated at the graveside.
