PONIES’ FEEDING TIME BIG COLLIERY ISSUE
IPSWICH, Monday. — Disputes on what time pit ponies should be fed and the price of gelignite kept Rosewood colliery (Rosewood field) idle to-day.
The issues will be discussed at a conference tomorrow.
The views of the Rosewood colliery branch of the Q.C.E.U. were set out to-day by Messrs. Sbeghan (chairman) and Habutzel (secretary) . They said two horse-drivers had been feeding the ponies before starting time each day. At a conference between union representatives and the manager last Thursday it had been agreed the men should feed the horses on a roster system and be paid overtime.
The branch claimed the manager had repudiated that agreement, and said he would feed the horses himself.
On Sunday afternoon he fed the horses. This morning, the statement continued, the horses had not been fed, and work stopped because of that.
Most of the other mines had horse-keepers who fed the animals three times a day. Horses at Rosewood were fed at 3 p.m. and had no more until 3 p.m. the next day.
Men at the branch supported the horse-drivers and say the horses should be fed in the morning, the statement continued.
Tomorrow morning the vice-president of the Q.O.E.U. (Mr. R. James), branch officials and the management will confer on this dispute and the other one regarding the price of explosives.
The branch is asking the company to reduce the price of gelignite to 6/5 a packet.
Mr. E. Joynson, on behalf of the company, said tonight apparently there was a misunderstanding about arrangements to feed the horses. He stated the manager had made no definite statement about feeding arrangements.

Rosewood Colliery Idle
IPSWICH: Failure of a compressor supplying air for the operation of pneumatic picks was responsible for the Rosewood colliery being idle on Tuesday and yesterday. The mine employs about 30 men, with a daily output of approximately 140 tons.
The manager (Mr. C. Parker) said that the larger of the two units used appeared to be blowing off satisfactory at the pit tops. Miners complained that adequate pressure was not being maintained below. Yesterday afternoon mechanics were working to rectify the fault, and it was expected that the equipment would be operative today.
The Q.C.E.U. president. (Mr. T. M. Miller), who visited the mine in the afternoon, said members would report for duty today.

COAL MINING LEASE RECOMMENDED
In the Mining Warden’s Court yesterday, the Acting Warden (Mr. C. Innes) recommended a coal mining lease application (No. 305) by the Rosewood Colliery Co. for approval, subject to survey and provisions of Section 17 of the Mining on Private Land Acts being complied with. Underground mining operations are to be carried out to a depth of not less than 75ft. from the lowest part of the surface.
Ernest Joynson, one of the applicants said in evidence that, In his opinion, 75ft. from the surface at the minimum depth would be safe. The surface area would probably be used for a shaft and a fan house. He added that there was 72ft. of sandstone intervening between the surface and the coal seam.
Mr. John Casey (Messrs. Casey and Williams) appeared for the applicants.
When the application for a mining lease by Rosemount Collieries Pty. Ltd. (No. 317) was mentioned, Mr. T. H. E. Palmer (Messrs. Hargreaves and Palmer) stated he was appearing for certain Rosewood townspeople who were objecting.
Mr. H. V. Gibbs (Messrs. Walker and Walker) said he would lodge a formal objection on behalf of the Moreton Shire Council, and Mr. John Casey stated he would appear for the applicants.
Mr. Innes adjourned the hearing to August 14.
The application (No. 397) by J. M. Bruce, A. J. Lovedey, and W. A. Ruhno, Rosewood, was also adjourned to August 14. An application (No. 306) by Rosewood Colliery Co. was adjourned to July 17.
