COAL MINING.
Hopes for Expansion. Marburg people have taken the drastic changes of the last quarter of a century in a fine spirit. They have received the latest important development kindly, and great hopes for expansion of the coal-mining industry are entertained. One colliery, Mountain Ash, which was opened some years ago, is not now working, but the Malabar mine, a few miles from the township reports a steadily increasing output, while the development by Mr. Cochrane of a smaller pit is being watched with lnterest.
The Malabar operations are being directed by two well-known experts, Messrs. W. F., and Alex. Lawrie, who have had vast experience on the Ipswich field.
Sixteen men are employed at present, but the management has under consideration plans for another tunnel to meet fresh orders, and it is expected that the output will be doubled by June.
A proposal also lias been put forward to extend the railway line to the mine to overcome the difficulties of cartage in wet weather.
Malabar coal has been described as excellent. It is of the usual Walloon type, with long flame, and is highly gaseous.
