Edward was one of ten children. His father had the License of the Exhibition Hotel owned on cnr. Leichhardt and Gibbs Streets, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane in October 1878. He worked as a labourer thereafter, before moving to the Lockyer Valley and becoming a farmer around 1890.

Edward was only 4 when his father was killed in a shocking accident at Deep Gully, about six miles (9.6km) from Gatton. He was on the way home with his horse and spring-dray and called into a neighbour’s place about half a mile (800m) from his residence. He left about 3 o’clock but did not make it home. His horse did, which raised the alarm. They found Charles Manttan pinned under the guard-irons of the over-turned dray and he was deceased. He was only 46 years old.

Edward married Violet at the home of her parents, “Parkhill”, at Lanefield in 1912. A kitchen tea was held in the Lanefield Baptist Church on 2nd April, a few days before, in honour of their marriage. The Reverend Henry Richard George Hill married them. Elsie Collett was Violet’s bridesmaid and Edward’s brother Reginald Manttan was best man. The bride’s and bridesmaid’s dresses were made by Miss Bassett and Elsie Collett made the the millinery. The veil and orange blossoms and the shower-bouquet were gifts from Mrs Ethel Collett.

Edward was employed by Ruhno & Maher as a Carter, moving goods to and from the railway station, delivering good to customers and collecting cream from the farms.

In 1913 he received a nasty gash in the fleshy part of this hand while unloading goods for the store. The wound, caused by a piece of hoop-iron, was treated by Dr. Wallace. In November the next year, Edward was injured again when driving Ruhno and Maher’s cream wagon, which was being pulled by 2 horses, as it was descending the steep hill near Mrs George Keate’s property at Kunkala. The road was particularly jolty and uneven there, owing to the rush of rain water down the step angle. The horses were unable to ease the load down the hill, and gathered more speed as they went along. The rear wheel broke, all the spokes gave out and Edward was thrown to the ground. The horses freed themselves and ran home to Rosewood some 2½ miles (4 km). Mr. A. B. Farrell noticed the horses minus the driver, and drove out to the scene of the accident, where he found Edward badly injured. He drove him into Dr Hurrey’s who wasn’t home, so he was taken to Dr Wallace. Edward was terribly cut about the chest, and his collar-bone was severely strained.

Edward moved his family around finding work. The electoral rolls track his movements.

On 3rd March 1947, the Manttans moved onto a farm at Lanefield which belonged to Mrs. Smith (Brisbane). Herbert and Eda Dowe and family had been living there for a number of years. They moved to Toowoomba.
