Vera Beryl CROWTHER

Vera was born in 1895 at Cootamundra, NSW, to George Harcourt Crowther and Mary Magdeline née Mayer. George moved his family from Pimpana to Ashwell when he bought the former Bensley farms in 1910.

Vera found work at the People’s General Supply Store in Rosewood until November 1916, when she went with her family to live at Oakey.

On Saturday, 1st November 1916, after closing time, the employees of William Ruhno and Edward Maher assembled to say goodbye and make a presentation to Miss Vera Crowther. Mr. Maher, in presenting Vera with the gift of a handbag, referred to the creditable manner in which she had always carried out her duties, and expressed regret that she was leaving.

Vera moved house several times during her lifetime.

In 1922 she was a Milliner and worked from her home, “Kensington”, Russell Street, Toowoomba.
In 1925 she lived in “Montrose” at Neil Street, Toowoomba, and was a Cafe Proprietor in McKenzie Street with her sisters.
In 1936 she lived at 2 Kingston Street, and was a Shopkeeper.
In 1938 her home was “Bemersyde”, Margaret Street, Toowoomba. During her years in Toowoomba she was a keen golfer and secretary of the Toowoomba Golf Club.
In 1939 the whole family moved to Coorparoo in Brisbane.
In 1949 she is listed in the electoral rolls at 2 Barnia Avenue Burwood, NSW and then 12 Chelsford Avenue, Burwood. Her occupation was a Manufacturer.
In 1968 she lived at 16 Pembroke Street Parramatta; occupation, Business Woman.
In 1972 she was living 2/18 Kellet Street, in Toowong and remained there until her death in Brisbane in August 1983.
